Elementary School: Artist-in-Residency

A few years ago I created a pilot Artist-in-Residency program at a local elementary school in Alameda California USA. The school district and many around the country and world have NO ART TEACHERS in the elementary schools. This just drives me crazy. As a professional artist and visionary this has got to be one of the worst things we can do to our kids, to our families, communities, state, nation, and world! What we want to be doing is creatively nurturing our youth, especially when they are young. When they are still open, in the magical zone, and not closed or damaged. It's not about the product of art, it's about the process of creativity that we want to [...]

Sarasota Chalk Festival 2012

I wasn't able to get to the Sarasota Chalk Festival in Florida this year for the fantastic and amazing biggest chalk drawing festival in the world - which also includes murals and graffiti. But I can show you some photos and hook you up with them on Facebook.   (apologies for not having photographers credits) Carolyn Schultz     Internationally known Kurt Wenner and crew.   Leon Keer

3rd Satellite Photo of Art for Wagner: Burning Man 2012

Mark Wagner, Founder and Creative Director of the nonprofit Drawing on Earth went to Burning Man this year. Wagner registered onsite as an official Burning Man artist on the desert in Northern Nevada. He picked a spot, a marker was set with a GPS and Wagner, and using a simple garden tool, rope, stake, and a hammer he drew on the Earth. Working in the early mornings and late into the night under an amazing bright full moon Wagner covered approx. an acre of desert with drawings. Burning Man is one of the largest creative events in the world. This year over 60,000 lived creatively together on a dried lake bed north of Reno NV. When everyone was [...]

Dublin Food, Wine, & Art Festival

Mark Wagner was invited to chalk draw at the Dublin (CA,USA) Food, Wine, & Art Festival called Splatter. Sticking with the theme Wagner designed used a palette, grapes, glass of wine, spoon, knife, and a brush to create the image. Wagner photographed the still life and then used a software program called BSAsidewalk3D which "creates easy-to-use grids for copying anamorphic projections of images onto sidewalks or other surfaces. The result, when viewed from the correct observation point, is a 3D illusion that appears to be a (usually large) object or scene." "One of the best moments was when I needed help in setting the chalk line so I could grid out the image. I asked a dad and [...]

Out of the Box

It's the kids who are often over looked, not seen because they aren't as handsome, smart, or fast as other kids, it's these kids who live out of the box who will be the ones who will help save the world, save humanity by helping us stay connected to nature, and to our creativity and imagination.

Oxford Phoenix

Oxford Elementary School - Berkeley California USA Funded by a generous grant from the Berkeley Public Education Foundation. BPEF 4th grade teacher Lauren Bollier (on left) invited Mark Wagner, Founder of Drawing on Earth to work with her class. The schools power animal/mascot is the Phoenix. After an assembly Mark begins with a chalk drawing demo by drawing a flame. Each student is invited to practice with a flame - in a sense lighting the entire playground on fire!
